Digital Identity in the future

Safe, secure and convenient

The Australian Government Digital Identity System is already in use. More than 8 million Australians and 1.4 million businesses already have safe, secure and convenient access to over 120 government services online with a Digital Identity.

As the System expands, you will be able to access more Australian Government services online by using your Digital Identity rather than visiting a shopfront with your proof of identity documents.

The decision to create and use a Digital Identity is up to you. Once you create your Digital Identity you can use it again and again. If you can’t use Digital Identity, or don’t want to, you can keep accessing government services on the phone or in person at government shopfronts across the country.

In the future, proposed Digital Identity legislation will allow the Australian Government to expand the Digital Identity system to a whole-of-economy solution. You will be able to use your Digital Identity to prove who you are online to access state and territory services as well as private sector services. The proposed legislation will also establish permanent governance structures for the Digital Identity system and enshrine in law a range of privacy and consumer protections.

Set it up once, and then reuse it whenever you are asked to prove who you are.
