Do I need a Digital ID to do my shopping?

The answer is no.

The Australian Government’s Digital ID system gives you a secure option to verify your ID online to access a service.

Retailers are not using the Australian Government’s Digital ID system in the design of emerging anti-theft gate technology.

Digital ID’s used in the Australian Government’s Digital ID system are not a number assigned to you and they cannot be used to track your activity, or monitor your behaviour, including for shopping.

You don’t need a Digital ID to go shopping and it can’t track your movements, purchases, online activity or bank details.

The Australian Government’s Digital ID is controlled by you. You choose to create it, you choose to use it.

Your Digital ID, such as your myGovID, can only be used by you and with your consent to access government online services.

You can use your Australian Government Digital ID wherever you see this button online:

If you can’t or don’t want to use a Digital ID, you can access government services the same way you do now, such as username and password, by phone or by visiting a government shopfront.

Set it up once, and then reuse it whenever you are asked to prove who you are.
